Libraries

NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY

Rose Reading Room NYPL

The New York Public Library is the top must-see for all book lovers. The Stephen A. Shwarzman Building is the main branch of the public library system, and it is home to the iconic lion statues, dubbed Patience and Fortitude. Inside the building is the famous Rose Reading Room, featuring breathtaking ceiling murals and classic architecture. The Polonsky Exhibition inside the building features several literary treasures, including manuscripts and letters from well-known authors, and Charles Dickens’s writing desk and chair.

THE MORGAN LIBRARY AND MUSEUM

Morgan Library and Museum

This unique museum houses J.P. Morgan’s library, as well as several bookish exhibitions. The collection includes dozens of rare books and artifacts, including a Gutenberg Bible, first edition books, and dozens of manuscripts and letters from great authors such as Henry David Thoreau, Jane Austen, and Beatrix Potter. My favorite room in the Morgan Library and Museum is the historic library room (pictured above) which looks like it came straight out of a murder mystery mansion.

Book Stores

ALBERTINE BOOKS

Albertine Books NYC

This cozy bookstore, located a a short walk from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, specializes mainly in French literature, with some books in English as well. The second floor of Albertine Books features a ceiling mural showcasing different planets, stars, and constellations.

Right outside of the bookstore sits a golden Le Petit Prince statue, staring up at the sky. This charming little statue is the perfect photo opportunity for book lovers.

MCNALLY JACKSON

McNally Jackson NYC

McNally Jackson is an independent bookstore with five locations across the NYC area. Their stylish stores have hundreds of books and merchandise, which include stationery, tote bags, and other bookish odds and ends.

THE STRAND

The Strand NYC

The Strand is easily one of my favorite places in NYC. One of the best-known bookstores in the city, their motto “18 Miles of Books,” is not to be taken lightly. They have TONS of books, including rare and signed ones. Aside from books, they have dozens of bookish gifts and souvenirs, from enamel pins to pencil pouches. The Strand is the type of store that I could spend weeks in and never get bored.

RIZZOLI BOOKSTORE

Rizzoli Bookstore NYC

Rizzoli Bookstore specializes in illustrated books in many different languages, as well as other types of literature. It’s one of the most elegant book stores in NYC, just a couple of blocks away from the Rockefeller Center.

I hope you enjoyed this book lover’s guide to NYC, and that these suggestions will give you some places to visit during your trip. Enjoy your stay in NYC!
